Finalists announced for the Leopold Conservation Award in California
September 24, 2008

San Francisco, Calif. – Recognizing the significant contributions of leading California farmers and ranchers to environmental stewardship, Sand County Foundation, California Farm Bureau Federation and Sustainable Conservation announce three finalists for the 2008 Leopold Conservation Award in California.  Named in honor of world-renowned conservationist Aldo Leopold, it carries a $10,000 cash award. The Leopold Conservation Award is presented annually in seven states to private landowners who practice exemplary land stewardship and management.



Leopold Conservation Award in Nebraska to be presented to A.B. Cox
September 16, 2008
The Nebraska Cattlemen, in collaboration with Wisconsin-based Sand County Foundation, announce Tuesday that A.B. Cox of Mullen will be the 2008 Nebraska recipient of the Leopold Conservation Award. The Nebraska Cattlemen and Sand County Foundation will recognize Cox on Dec. 11 during the Nebraska Cattlemen Convention & Trade Show in Kearney.

SCF Director Indy Burke named director of the University of Wyoming Institute of Environment and Natural Resources

SCF Director Dr. Ingrid (Indy) Burke, a renowned ecologist who has had a distinguished career in teaching and research, has been named director of the Haub School and Ruckelshaus Institute of Environment and Natural Resources (ENR) at the University of Wyoming.



SCF helps fund bioreactor installation in Iowa
August 22, 2008
A large demonstration bioreactor, funded jointly by Sand County Foundation and Agriculture's Clean Water Alliance was installed by Iowa Soybean Association personnel and local contractors near West Buttrick Creek northwest of Des Moines, Iowa on August 22.  Sand County Foundation staff spoke at a program for area farmers and Iowa farm press to mark the occasion. The Foundation provided funding for some of the early research done on the effectiveness of bioreactors.

SCF takes part in stewardship tour held at Pape Ranches in Wyoming
July 16, 2008
A tour of Pape Ranches, near Daniel, sponsored by the Wyoming Stock Growers Association and the Wyoming Department of Agriculture, took place Tuesday, July 15. The ranch, owned by Norm and Barbara Pape, is the winner of the 2008 Leopold Conservation Award, which is presented by Wisconsin-based Sand County Foundation as part of the Wyoming Environmental Stewardship Awards program.



Cooperative Sagebrush Initiative receives major grant
July 1, 2008
The Natural Resource Conservation Service (NRCS) this week announced approval of a $2 million project by the Cooperative Sagebrush Initiative (CSI) to develop a market-based approach for restoring rangelands and critical wildlife habitat in the sagebrush region of the western U.S.  Initial funding for CSI was provided by Sand County Foundation’s Bradley Fund for the Environment. The Foundation has been the leader of this partnership since 2006 by securing funds, hosting meetings and sponsoring research.

2008 Leopold Conservation Award in Texas presented to Llano Springs Ranch

The famed wide open spaces of Texas are under siege, threatened by ever-expanding suburban development and fragmenting into ever-smaller pieces as people in cities buy up land in the country. The good news is conservation-minded landowners are bastions against these trends, places like Llano Springs Ranch south of Junction, which on May 21 received the Leopold Conservation Award for Texas from Sand County Foundation and Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, part of the department’s Lone Star Land Steward Awards program.



SCF President Dr. Brent Haglund speaks at the Going Green Wisconsin Expo

Sand County Foundation President Dr. Brent Haglund spoke Friday, May 2 at the Going Green Wisconsin Expo, at the Alliant Energy Center in Madison, Wis. His presentation, titled Local Solutions for Environmental Improvement, gave voice to the idea that principled, voluntary, and enduring solutions to significant environmental problems have been developed by private landowners across America.

Sand County Foundation seeks Associate Director, Community Based Conservation Network
March 20, 2008
Sand County Foundation seeks an individual to fill the position of Associate Program Director for its Community Based Conservation Network (CBCN). This individual will be responsible for coordinating and documenting citizen-led conservation projects across North America, facilitating learning exchanges among landholders and practitioners, and assisting Foundation staff in identifying and disseminating lessons learned across projects in North American and Africa.  The Associate Program Director will be assigned a lead role in designated projects and will support program development, management, and fundraising.
